Offering for city's hungry people

Cafe on Vine in Davenport

During these 40 days of Lent, a special offering will provide needed funds for a new meal center serving homeless and low-income people in Davenport.

Café on Vine is working to fill a critical inner-city need left by the abrupt closing of John Lewis Café in August. After many hours of hard work by community volunteers, the help of contractors, and an emergency grant from United Way, Café on Vine is now serving hot meals to approximately 100 people per day.

The meal site is under the umbrella of Merton House Inc., a faith-based not-for-profit local organization.

This ministry is Matthew 25 in action: “Just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.”

Works of love are traditionally among the disciplines for marking Lent. Look for an envelope to benefit Café on Vine in a pew rack or at the Information Center. Or simply mark your contribution clearly for “Cafe on Vine” and mail it to St. Paul.
